VICTORIAS City – To promote responsible media consumption, the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the city government of Victorias in Negros Occidental.
The agreement, formalized on November 17, emphasized a commitment to empowering Filipino families to choose age-appropriate, value-driven media content.
The MOU was signed by MTRCB chairperson and chief executive officer Diorella Maria Sotto-Antonio and Victorias City’s Mayor Javier Miguel Benitez.
The MOU highlights the state’s recognition of communication and information as important in nation-building. It emphasizes the impact of television programs on children’s values formation and intellectual, socio-emotional, and educational development.
As such, it calls for efforts to safeguard children’s interests by providing media content that aligns with their needs and avoids exploitation.
“This is the first MOU under this program that MTRCB has signed outside Metro Manila, and the first in Negros Occidental,” said Sotto-Antonio.
She added: “In today’s era where media significantly influences values and behavior, the role of parents and supervising adults is crucial. Their guidance serves as the first line of protection against inappropriate content that may affect young minds.”
Mayor Benitez affirmed Victorias City’s alignment with MTRCB’s vision of creating media-literate communities.
“We must encourage our children and families to become conscious viewers who can critically engage with media content. This empowers them to grow as informed and compassionate individuals, ready to lead our city in the future,” he said.
The mayor further emphasized the importance of active media consumption.
“Let us not be passive consumers but active participants. Curate your experience, discern truth from fiction, and be vigilant in navigating the vast media landscape,” he said./PN
