BACOLOD City – Are the mussels (tahong) washing up on the beaches of San Enrique, Negros Occidental safe for human consumption?
They are, according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Negros Occidental.
BFAR-Negros Occidental OIC director Marian Jill Abeto said two species of mussels can be found in Negros Occidental – the green and the brown.
The species washing up on the shores of San Enrique are brown mussels.
Abeto said mussels being washed up by the strong water current are those located in shallow waters.
What’s happening in San Enrique now is not the first time, Abeto added.
She advised the public consuming mussels to make sure they are fresh, and clean them thoroughly before cooking./PN
