ILOILO City – Natural gas sustained for six hours the fire that hit the back portion of the city’s controlled dumpsite in Barangay Calajunan, Mandurriao district on March 20, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).

Natural gas is flammable gas consisting largely of methane and other hydrocarbons occurring naturally underground (often in association with petroleum) and used as fuel.

Eleven residents were hurt in the fire that started past 5 p.m. and was completely put out around 11:30 p.m. some six hours after .

According to City Fire Marshal Jerry Candido, natural gas made it difficult for firefighters to quickly stop the blaze that covered some 100 square meters.

He did not discount the possibility that someone threw a lighted cigarette butt in the dumpsite and this resulted to the fire.

This was the 45th fire incident in the city this March alone, BFP records showed./PN
