MANILA – Sen. Loren Legarda wants more environment-friendly schools in the country.
The Department of Education (DepEd) should require new public schools to put up vegetable gardens, rainwater catchment systems and material recovery facilities, she said.
The DepEd has a proposed budget of P567.5 billion for 2017.
“The DepEd receives the largest slice in the budget pie since education [is] our highest priority,” Legarda claimed.
“But it is not enough that we allocate funds for education,” she stressed. “We must also teach our youth how they can put values into action. We must inculcate in them the value of an environment-friendly lifestyle.”
Also, the Antiqueña senator asked the Education department to help restore heritage school buildings.
“If we ignore them now, next year might be too late, as these old buildings could already disintegrate,” she said.
Legarda urged the DepEd to ask the Commission on Audit if the latter can tap unobligated funds for the restoration of Gabaldon buildings, which she said may still be used to address classroom shortage./PN
