DUMAGUETE City – The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in Negros Oriental has uncovered a swindling modus operandi using fictitious names and addresses on Facebook.
At least 25 people sought the NBI’s help after they allegedly fell victim to an invitation to rent a house in Barangay Motong.
Using an “enticing” monthly rental, the invitation prompts users to pay a down payment of between P5,000 and P10,000 and visit the place, only to find the supposed house for rent still occupied.
Special Investigator Contesa Lastimoso said the offer is a fully furnished house — fully air-conditioned, with complete utilities including a television, free electricity, free Wi-Fi, and free cable connection — for a monthly rental of only P5,000
That it is difficult to find such house for a considerably cheap rent makes the offer enticing, stressed Lastimoso.
Lastimoso identified the suspect as Pilarica Caballero.
The NBI discovered that Caballero is facing several complaints before the barangay for misrepresentation.
Fifteen of the victims are preparing an estafa complaint against Caballero.
Two of them are foreigners, who already filed a complaint at the City Prosecutor’s Office.
Receipts issued to the victims are not registered with the Bureau of Internal Revenue. They included blank ones that may be bought from department stores.
One of the victims said he paid P10,000 as down payment without doubt, trusting that he was in a “City of Gentle People.” (PNA)
