MANILA – With the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak worsening by the day, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) have decided to cancel the remainder of the Season 95 action.
NCAA’s Management Committee, headed by chairman Peter Cayco of host school Arellano University, said in a statement that the Policy Board has approved the cancellation of the remaining sports events.
“NCAA Season 95 is terminated,” said Cayco in a statement. “This was arrived at after consulting the Policy Board members. First and foremost that was considered was the safety of the athletes, students, fans, and officials.”
Cayco added that they will also discuss the possibilities of allowing the graduating players who didn’t finish their last playing year to represent their respective schools next season.
Prior to the cancellation, the volleyball tournaments had two more playdates in the eliminations with University of Perpetual Help Altas earning an outright finals berth in the men’s division after sweeping its nine matches.
College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers, on the other hand, were just two matches away from grabbing an outright finals entry in women’s volleyball, while defending champion Arellano Lady Chiefs, San Beda Lady Red Lionesses and Perpetual Help Lady Altas have completed the semifinals picture.
Aside from volleyball, other sporting events that were not able to complete the season were basketball, chess, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, demo sport 3×3, football, lawn tennis, soft tennis, track and field, under-15 basketball, and beach volleyball./PN
