BACOLOD City – Nearly 2,500 residents of Cauayan, Negros Occidental experienced flooding following torrential rains brought by a low pressure area (LPA) since Monday.

An estimated 2,496 individuals or 500 families were affected as of 9 a.m. yesterday, according to acting Municipal Social Worker and Development (MSWD) officer Eugenia Caña in an interview with Radyo Bandera-Bacolod City/Negros Occidental.

“So far, sige pa ang amon validation as to the extent of damage,” said Caña.

Meanwhile, four landslides took place in Barangay Abaca, Cauayan, leaving the road impassable to four-wheeled vehicles, she added.

The Cauayan Art Center, Cauayan Central Elementary School and Tiling Barangay Hall served as evacuation centers. The MSWD Office distributed food and non-food items to affected residents.

A combination of flood waters from the mountains and high tide aggravated the floods, Cauayan mayor John Rey Tabujara said in a separate interview.

Evacuees were allowed to return home in areas where flood waters had subsided, the mayor added./PN
