ILOILO City – Up to 769 road accidents occurred in the city in the first four months of this year, or from January to April.
The number is, however, much lower than the 1,085 road crashes recorded in the same period last year, data from the Iloilo City Police Office’s (ICPO) Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) showed.
“Based sa records naton sa comparison sang traffic accidents nga natabu sa tuig 2023 kag 2022, mahambal naton nga nag-decrease significantly,” said Police Lieutenant Colonel Ethan Estaya, ICPO-TEU chief, in an interview with Panay News.
He attributed the decrease to the traffic education and sessions offered by the ICPO-TEU to drivers and student drivers.
A dedicated hotline number also helped them respond to traffic issues, he added.
ICPO-TEU said of the 769 road accidents, three were cases of reckless imprudence resulting to homicide, 161 were reckless imprudence resulting to physical injury and 605 incidents were of reckless imprudence resulting to damage to property.
Meanwhile, majority of the road accidents involved modernized jeepneys, Estaya said.
He explained that the drivers are new to this type of jeepney, which is far different from the traditional ones.
“Sa subong in all vehicles nga gadalagan diri sa syudad indi layo nga ma-involve sa vehicular accident ang aton nga modernized jeepneys kay ang isa namon ka assessment is lain kag namag-o ang drivers sa pagdala sini compared sa mga traditional jeepneys,” Estaya said./PN
