ILOILO City – Councilor Jeffrey Ganzon wanted contractors of construction projects not complying with safety rules held liable should there be accidents.
In the proposed ordinance he introduced during the city council’s regular session on Tuesday, Ganzon stated that unsafe construction sites could kill or maim pedestrians and motorists.
The proposed ordinance was referred to the committee on engineering, construction and public works chaired by Councilor Ely Estante.
Ganzon said many ongoing road projects in the city do not have adequate and visible signage and traffic control devices.
Some construction sites, on the other hand, do not have adequate lighting, he added.
Ganzon also sounded alarm over stockpiles on roads. These are hazardous to motorists, he warned.
Many excavations, potholes and manholes do not have safety covers, too, Ganzon observed./PN
