BACOLOD City – The Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) in Negros Occidental is preparing financial assistance for hog raisers reeling from the death of their swine due to diseases.

The livelihood assistance is from P2,000 to P5,000 for each beneficiary, said PSWDO officer-in-charge Gerla Sario.

They are coordinating with the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) and the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) regarding this.

The PSWDO will also request additional assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

Data from the PVO as of Tuesday showed 1,143 hog raisers were affected, 5,252 hog deaths recorded, and damage pegged at P63.5 million.

Among the causes of hog deaths were hog cholera, pneumonia and heat stroke.

The province, however, remains free of African swine fever./PN
