BACOLOD City – The Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) of Negros Occidental sent relief assistance to families in Cadiz City displaced by floods due to incessant rains generated by a combination of shear line and low pressure area (LPA).
PSWDO head Merle Garcia said over the weekend that 273 families or 878 individuals from eight villages of Cadiz City were affected by last week’s heavy rains.
Among the relief supplies distributed to the evacuees were food and non-food items, as well as hygiene kits.
The affected families were allowed to return home after weather conditions improved over the weekend.
PSWDO data on Friday, Jan. 13, showed that at least 15,198 persons from a total of 4,476 families have been affected by floods since Jan. 11.
Aside from Cadiz City, flooding was also reported in the cities of Bago, Sagay and Talisay and in the municipalities of Candoni, Cauayan, Ilog, San Enrique, and Valladolid.
The worst-hit localities were in the south, particularly in San Enrique where 7,663 persons from 2,048 families were hit by floods, while 5,795 individuals from 1,924 families were affected in the neighboring Valladolid
Provincial administrator, Atty. Rayfrando Diaz, said rains triggered landslides in the cities of Sagay, San Carlos and Talisay.
In Talisay City, at least one house was destroyed by a landslide in Barangay San Fernando.
In San Carlos City, landslides blocked the eco-translink highway connecting the city and the town of Don Salvador Benedicto, although Diaz said authorities were able to immediately clear the highway of large rocks and debris. (With reports from Philippine News Agency)/PN
