BACOLOD City – In anticipation of the holiday season and after the annual celebration of the MassKara festival, the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) here assured there is stable supply of meat and poultry products in the province.
This, despite the increased demand during the MassKara festival and the expected spike come the holidays.
PVO and the Animal Health and Meat Inspections Services Division record showed there is no significant change on the prevailing market prices of livestock and poultry products since October this year.
Based on their data, meat and poultry consumption in the province showed that pork has the highest annual per capita consumption of 12.290 kilograms or a total annual consumption of 37,595.11 metric tons, while the annual production of pork in the province is 54,349 metric tons and there is a surplus of 16,753.89 metric tons.
For dressed chicken, the total consumption is 30,651.18 metric tons annually with a total production of 31,171 metric tons and a surplus of 1,079.82 metric tons.
The same also with chevon or goat meat, which is high in demand in Northern Negros, with data showing an annual consumption of 532.266 metric tons with 2,538 metric tons annual production and surplus of 2,005.734 metric tons.
Backyard sector of the livestock and poultry industry is also making contributions to the local supply as a result of improved production performance of their animals through the continuous effort of the provincial government and its Provincial Veterinary Office in upgrading the capability of backyard raisers and providing them with genetically superior breed of animals.
Meanwhile, established players in the local livestock and poultry industry are also expanding their operations to cater for the expected increase of demand in the coming months. (PIA/PN)
