BACOLOD City – Negrense athletes who won medals in the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet 2019 received cash incentives from the provincial government.
Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. led the awarding ceremony held at the Negros Occidental Multi-Purpose Activity Center in Bacolod City on Friday, March 15.
Marañon commended the Negrense student-athletes and their coaches for making the Negros Occidental delegation the over-all champion.
Gold medalist received P1,200; silver medalist, P800; and bronze winner, P600.
“We give out cash incentives to underscore the province’s gratitude to the athletes for their hard work in giving Negros Occidental honor in the field of sports,” the governor said.
During the WVRAA Meet 2019 held in Roxas City, Capiz last Feb. 17 to 23, the Negros Occidental delegation won 415 gold medals, including 181 in elementary, 209 in secondary, and 25 in Special Education (SPED) categories.
Negrense athletes also brought home 379 silver medals composed of 128 from elementary, 210 from secondary, and 41 from SPED, as well as 193 bronze medals.
Negros Occidental re-joined the WVRAA Meet in 2018 after competing separately in 2017 under the Negros Island Region (NIR).
After the NIR was abolished in August 2017, Negros Occidental again competed in last year’s regional meet. (With a report from PNA/PN)
