DUMAGUETE City – Will localized peace negotiations work?

Negros Oriental governor Roel Degamo proposed a local version of the peace process after the cancellation of the ceasefire between the government and the New People’s Army.

Degamo will call stakeholders to a meeting with the aim of sustaining the gains of the local campaign against insurgency.

The governor suggested a gathering of nongovernment and civil society organizations, the Philippine Army and the police at Camp Leon Kilat, headquarters of the 79th Infantry Battalion, in Tanjay City.

They would discuss the planned local peace process to be facilitated by the Oriental Negros Children’s Advocate Network, headed by Marieta Jambora.

Basic services have been reaching hinterland barangays since Negros Oriental was declared a “conflict-manageable and development-ready province,” said Degamo.

Residents in far-flung areas benefit from medical missions five times a month, working water and electricity systems, farm-to-market roads, and livelihood programs, he said.

Moreover, many rebels have returned to mainstream society as a result of Bayanihan activities, said Degamo.

He stressed that he wants to preserve peace in Negros Oriental.

“We can’t win this war and armed struggle with bullets,” Degamo said, reiterating statements during the declaration of Negros Oriental as conflict-manageable and development-ready. “We only need to talk and present programs that will uplift the quality of lives of our people.” (PNA)
