MANILA – Negrense FIDE Master Sander Severino delivered two gold medals for Team Philippines in the para chess event of the 11th ASEAN Para Games on late Tuesday at the Lor-in Hotel in Surakarta, Indonesia.
The Silay City, Negros Occidental native notched his first gold in the men’s individual P1 event, where he defeated fellow Filipino Henry Roger Lopez in the finale game.
Severino, who played for the Davao team in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines, captured his second gold medal when he teamed up with Lopez and Jasper Rom to finish on top of the men’s team P1 event.
Menandro Redor also reigned supreme as he grabbed a gold medal in the VI B2-B3 division in 1-2-3 finish along with Arman Subaste and Darry Bernardo, who took the silver and bronze, respectively. The three recorded a gold medal in the team VI B2-B3 class.
Francis Ching, meanwhile, bagged two chess silver medals in the B1 Men’s Individual category and Para Chess B1 Men’s Team event along with Anthony Abogado and Cecilio Bilog.
Atty. Cheyzer Mendoza also had two silver medals as she finished second in the Women’s PI category and Women’s PI team event with Cheryl Angot and Fe Mangayayam.
Para Chess Women’s Team of Corazon Lucero, Charmaine Tonic and Theresa Bilog, on the other hand, captured a bronze medal in B2 Team category to complete Team Philippines’ chess domination.
Cendy Asusano, meanwhile, captured her second gold medal in Para athletics when she ruled the Women’s Shot Put F54 event. She earlier finished on top in the Women’s Javelin Throw F54 class.
Team Philippines also nabbed three bronze medals in Para athletics from Marites Burce (Women’s Shot Put F54), Andy Avellana (Men’s High Jump T42/T63) and King James Reyes (Men’s 1500 T46).
Para Swimming bet Roland Sabido splashed silver in Men’s 100m Backstroke S9, while Arnel Aba claimed bronze in Men’s 100m Butterfly S9. Deterson Omas also won a bronze in Para Judo J1 Male -60kg category.
The PH para-athletes has 14 gold, 16 silver, and 26 bronze medals as of Wednesday noon as they pressed to eclipse the tally of 20 golds, 20 silvers, and 29 bronzes in the Malaysian Games in 2017./PN
