Bernalyn Bejoy of Team Negros Occidental gained a qualification in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games with her silver medal finish in the 400-meter hurdles of 2019 Ayala Philippine Athletics Championships at City of Ilagan Sports Complex in Ilagan, Isabela.
Team Negros Occidental head coach Addy Arca said that Bejoy’s 62.14 seconds in the event was more than enough for her to qualify in the 2019 SEA Games to be held in the country later this year.
It was a double celebration for the Bacolod City native Bejoy on Thursday as she also captured a gold medal in the girls 400-meter dash event with 57.58 seconds performance.
“This is a great achievement for Bernalyn. All of her hardwork and perseverance have paid off,” said Arca. “She really deserves that qualification to the Southeast Asian Games.”
Team Negros Occidental’s Ann Katherine Quitoy, meanwhile, took home a gold medal in the girls’ javelin throw event after breaking the existing juniors national team record.
Quitoy bagged the gold medal in her pet event after tallying 44.81 meters heave, which according to Pinoy Athletics broke the national junior record of 44.54 meters by Rosie Villarito.
Meanwhile, Ilonggo Vince Jason Buhayan captured his second gold medal in the event with a 49.60 seconds performance in boys 400 meter, beating Edgar Carado of Adamson University and Clyde Monteflor of Team Baguio City./PN
