MANILA – Boxer Arthur Villanueva of Negros Occidental will try to move closer to another world title shot. He faces South African Zolani Tete in a world title eliminator match on April 8 in Manchester, United Kingdom.
According to the Bago City native, he considers this match against Tete his “last chance” to attain his dream of taking home a world championship belt.
The 28-year-old was unsuccessful in his first try for the world title. He was defeated by McJoe Arroyo for the International Boxing Federation (IBF) world super flyweight belt.
Arroyo has lost the belt to Filipino Jerwin Ancajas last year.
“Madami akong natutunan dun sa laban ko kay McJoe,” Villanueva said. “Sa ngayon, mas confident na ako na kaya ko manalo (kay Tete). Para sa akin last chance ko na ito sa world title kaya ayaw kong sayangin.”
In case Villanueva beats Tete, he will be set up against fellow Filipino boxer Marlon Tapales for the latter’s World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight belt.
“Sabi ng promoter ko (ALA Promotions head Michael Aldeguer) malakas si Zolani pero wala ‘yan dun sa determinasyon ko na manalo kontra sa kanya,” said the Negrense pugilist.
Villanueva will be parading a 30-1-0 win-loss-draw ring record with 16 knockouts wins. He is coming from a knockout victory over Mexican Juan Jimenez for the WBO Asia Pacific bantamweight belt.
The 28-year old Tete, on the other hand, is 24-3-0 in his career, with 20 knockouts. He has won his last eight bouts. He has also victimized Filipino boxers Jether Oliva, Eduard Penerio, Richard Garcia and Negrense Rexon Flores before.
The Villanueva-Tete world title eliminator match will be one of the undercards of the WBO lightweight title fight between champion Terry Flanagan and Petr Petrov at the Manchester Arena./PN
