MANILA – Negrense Angel Canino has been selected as part of the national women’s under-23 volleyball team that will compete in the 2019 Thailand Open Sealect Tuna Championships on July 4 to 10.

Even if she was underage, the Bacolod City native is not short in talent for the national team after recently leading the De La Salle-Zobel Junior Lady Spikers in UAAP juniors volleyball championship.

Canino, who also played for Bacolod Tay Tung High School before, was hailed as the tournament MVP and 1st Best Outside Hitter for her consistent showing for the Junior Lady Spikers.

Aside from Canino, also named as part of the 14-player pool were University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses’ Mafe Galanza, Kecelyn Galdones, Ysa Jimenez, setter Maji Mangulabnan, Rachelle Roldan, Imee Hernandez, and Janna Torres.

Also named were Rossie Rosier and Jewel Encarnacion of University of the Philippines, FEU’s Celine Domingo, Ivanna Agudo and Lyann De Guzman, and Justine Jazareno of De La Salle University.

Diana Carlos, Maria Lina Molde and Maristela Layug were earlier listed as part of the squad but the three begged off due to their commitment with Motolite in the Premier Volleyball League.

“‘Yun nga kasi hindi rin mapayagan kasi meron rin silang ipinaglalaban e,” said National team head coach Emilio Reyes. “Kasi nga nagbi-build rin sila ng new team so naintindihan naminyung mga ganoong part. Hindi rin naman kami insisting.”

The U-23 team will fly to Thailand on July 3 together with the national men’s team./PN
