MANILA – Mary Angeline Alcantara will be leading the eight Filipino taekwondo jins that will compete in the 3rd World Cadet Taekwondo Championships from Aug. 23 to 27, 2017 at the Sharm El Shik in Egypt.
The Negros Occidental-native Alcantara, a mainstay of the Hanah Taekwondo Gym, made it to the world tournament following her bronze medal finish in the Asian Championships in Vietnam last June.
“I am glad to represent the country on the world stage. I promise to give my all to make the country proud,” said Alcantara, gold medalist of 2017 Palarong Pambansa in Antique.
Hanah Taekwondo Gym head coach Vic Feria is optimistic Alcantara will bring honor to the country, citing her extensive preparation for the world event.
“We’ve done the best we can to prepare her. All we need now are prayers that God will give us the victory. It’s not only for Angeline (Alcantara) but for the province, country everyone,” Feria said.
He added: “We would like to thank Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. and Murcia mayor Andrew Montelibano for their support in us. Our campaign is quite difficult but your support inspires us not to give up in reaching our dreams.”
Aside from Alcantara, other Filipino jins in the tournament are Lex Joshua Provido, Mico Gabriel Chua, Raphael Ongkiko, Richard Jude Cajulis, Arianne Espida, Gerianne Kendall Therese Pineda and Maria Carmella Santos.
The Philippines has always been regarded as among the top contenders in various taekwondo international competitions. In the 2015 World Cadet championships, Wendil Jay Rama bagged a bronze medal for the country./PN
