Negrense Lobrido captures gold in China boxing tourney

MANILA – Negrense amateur fighter Leo Mhar Lobrido delivered the Philippines’ lone gold medal in the 4th Greater Area Bay Youth Boxing Challenge held recently Shenzhen, China.

The Bago City, Negros Occidental-native fighter emerged as the gold medal winner in the light flyweight division, according to a post by Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines and the Philippine Sports Commission.

“Nakwa ko man gid ang gold (I won the gold),” Lobrido, a Ramon Torres National High School standout, wrote in a Facebook post.

Prior to his gold medal feat in China, Lobrido first took home a gold medal for Western Visayas in the 46-kilogram schoolboys division of the 2023 Palarong Pambansa boxing in Marikina City.

Lobrido also represented the country in the ASBC Asian Junior & Schoolboys and Schoolgirls Boxing Championships in Al Ain City, United Arab Emirates last Agosto, but failed to win a medal.

Lobrido’s victory in China made up for Philippine boxing team’s one silver and four bronze medal finishes in the 2024 ASBC Asian Elite Men & Women Championships recently in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Marvin Tabamo clinched the silver medal in the men’s 51kg division, while Negrenses Ian Clark Bautista (men’s 57kg) and Riza Pasuit (women’s 57kg), Jay Bryan Baricuatro (men’s 48kg), and Mark Ashley Fajardo (men’s 63.5kg) won bronze medals./PN
