
MANILA – Negrense Ariel Joseph Alegarbes bagged two golds in the swimming competition of the 11th ASEAN Para Games on Tuesday at the Jatidri Swimming complex in Semarang, Indonesia.
The Silay City, Negros Occidental native notched his first gold in the men’s 100-meter backstroke S14 before he followed it up by ruling the men’s 50-meter butterfly S14 event.
Alegarbes’ double gold feat increased the Philippine swimming team’s gold haul to five following the victories of Ernie Gawilan, Roland Sabido and Angel Otom on Monday.
Gawilan, meanwhile, added a silver medal in the men’s 100-meter backstroke S7 event to add to his men’s 400-meter freestyle S7 gold and men’s 4×100-meter freestyle relay bronze, while Arnel Aba had a silver in the men’s 400-meter freestyle S9.
Ilonggo Daniel Enderes Jr., meanwhile, finished with bronze medal in athletics after finishing at third place in the men’s 5,000-meter T20 category on Monday afternoon.
“I am just happy to be still able to contribute medals for the country. I will be going home with a bronze medal,” the Barangay Rizal, Ibarra in Iloilo City resident Enderes said.
Cendy Asusano also scored a double gold after ruling the women’s javelin throw F54 and discus throw F54, while Jesebel Tordecilla notched a gold in women’s javelin throw F55 and bronze in discus throw F55.
Also with athletics gold is King James Reyes in the men’s 5000 meter run T46, while Jerrold Mangliwan regained his men’s wheelchair 100-meter T52 title with a victorious time of 19.18 seconds.
Aside from Enderes, other bronze medal winners in the Para Athletics were Evaristo Carbonell (men’s discus throw F11-13), Ronn Russel Mitra (men’s long jump T20), Joel Balatucan (men’s shot put F55) and Arman Dino (men’s 100-meter T47).
Achelle Guion settled for silver in the women’s 45-kilogram division of powerlifting, while Marydol Pamati-an ended with bronze in the women’s 41-kg class.
Table tennis also made its medal contribution with two bronze medals in the men’s team Class 4 through Billy Cartera, Racleo Martinez, and Darwin Salvacion and in the men’s class 8 doubles courtesy of Jobert Lumanta and Jayson Ocampo./PN
