MANILA – Filipino boxer Donnie Nietes is more than ready for his flyweight debut against Mexican Edgar Sosa in the main event of “Pinoy Pride 36” on Sunday at the StabHub Center in Carson, California.

According to Nietes’ trainer Edito Villamor, the Murcia, Negros Occidental-native boxer is more than prepared for his upcoming fight after completing 60 rounds of sparring sessions.

“Handa na si Donnie sa kanyang debut sa flyweight division,” Villamor told Panay News in an interview. “Malakas at mabilis siya para sa flyweight and I believe he will do good in this division.”

Nietes, the longest reigning Filipino world champion, said that he started his training early to acclimatize with his new weight class after staying in the 108 pound division for almost four years.

“I started earlier this time. I felt I wouldn’t be at my best if I didn’t start sooner,” Nietes said. “I would say the training’s at the same level with before, but of course, we want to make sure that the speed, power, and skills are in a higher level.”

“Edgar’s a Mexican. That means he is a tough fighter. I will be sure not to let my guard down and pour all what we’ve trained for, because I know this won’t be an easy first (flyweight) fight for me,” he added.

The 34-year-old Nietes has a 38-1-4 win-loss-draw ring record including 22 knockout wins. The Negrense boxer is also on a 27-bout winning run since his lone loss to Indonesian Angky Angkotta.

The 36-year-old Sosa, on the other hand, has a 52-9-0 win-loss-draw record, with 30 knockout victories. The Mexican comes fresh from a unanimous decision win to Orlando Guerrero in February./PN
