MANILA – Ryan Sermona captured the Philippine Games and Amusements Board (PGAB) lightweight title with a fifth-round, technical-knockout win over Roberto Gonzales at the Agoncillo Covered Court in Agoncillo, Batangas.

It was Sermona’s first boxing title since moving to the lightweight division early this year and his second PGAB title after winning the super featherweight class.

Sermona, a native of Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental, showed his aggressiveness early on by throwing numerous combinations, including a stinging right straight that wobbled his much younger opponent late in the second round Wednesday, Dec. 7.

Gonzales made his presence felt in the third and fourth rounds, but Sermona was unstoppable, with his quick attacks enough for the Negrense to clinch the victory at the fifth.

With the victory, the 29-year-old Sermona improved his boxing record to 20-8-0, with 13 wins by way of knockout, while Gonzales’ boxing slate fell to 27-3-0, with 17 stoppage victories.

Meanwhile Ilonggo Juanito Paredes scored a unanimous-decision win over John Lawrence Ordonio in the co-main event of the fight card presented by Saved by the Bell Promotions of Elmer Anuran.

The victory also snapped Paredes’ two-bout losing skid and, at the same time, made up for his unanimous-decision defeat to Ordonio during their first encounter just this March in La Union.

In other results, Negros Occidental native boxers Bengar Garcia and John Ray Logatiman also scored unanimous-decision wins over Richard Marceno and Brian Lobetania, respectively./PN
