MANILA – Marestella Torres-Sunang settled for a bronze medal finish in the women’s long jump event of the 2016 Asian Beach Games on late Tuesday afternoon in Danang, Vietnam.
The San Jose, Negros Oriental-native Torres-Sunang finished third among five competitors with at 6.10 meters. Vietnamese Thao Bui Thi Thu and Nguyen Thi Truc Mai took the 1-2 finish with 6.32 and 6.11 meters, respectively.
Torres-Sunang, who recently competed in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, struggled with 5.91, 6.00 and 5.94 in her first three attempts before accomplishing 6.10 meters on her fourth try.
Torres-Sunang, who is nursing a minor injury, failed to bag a medal on her third and last Olympic stint recently as she did not advance to the finals, not reaching the 6.75 meter mark during the preliminary round.
Meanwhile, Dumangas, Iloilo-native Philip Delarmino also clinched a bronze medal for the country after finishing at third place in the men’s bantamweight 51-54 kilogram division of Muay Thai.
Other bronze medalists for the country on Tuesday are Muay Thai’s Jonathan Polosan (men’s lightweight 60-63 kg) and Jay Harold Gregorio (men’s middleweight 71-75kg) and Helen Dawa (women’s -52 kilogram kurash).
Annie Ramirez, meanwhile, failed to clinch her second gold medal in the biennial event after losing in the quarterfinals round of the jiu-jitsu open division. She earlier bagged gold in the women’s -55 kilogram class.
The 72-man Philippine delegation remained at ninth place in the medal rankings with 2-1-10 gold-silver-bronze medals. The country is aiming to surpass the 3-2-7 haul of the country in 2014 in Thailand./PN
