NEGRENSE Bea Tan and Angelique Gervacio of Perlas Lady Spikers clinched the championship in the women’s division of the Beach Volleyball Republic on Tour on Sunday at the Sands SM By The Bay in Pasay City.
Tan, a native of Negros Occidental, and her former Ateneo Lady Eagles teammate Gervacio ruled the distaff side after beating Ilongga Roma Doromal and Kly Orillaneda of National University-Boysen, 21-18, 21-18, in the finals.
It was the third time that Tan has won a BVR leg championship this year. The Negrense beach volleyball specialist had two BVR leg titles with Charo Soriano in Puerto Galera and Palawan.
In the semifinals, Tan and Gervacio bested Bacolodnon Fille Cainglet Cayetano and Kyla Atienza of Creamline, 21-16, 20-22, 15-11, while Doromal and Orillaneda ousted Maynilad-UST’s Babylove Barbon and Gen Eslapor, 16-21, 21-16, 15-12.
Maynilad-UST’s Barbon and Eslapor, meanwhile, was able to salvage the bronze medal finish in the women’s category after a 17-21, 21-12, 15-8 come-from-behind win over Cayetano and Atienza of Creamline.
In the men’s category, the Philippine Air Force’s Jessie Lopez and Ranran Abdilla finally won a BVR title with a 21-17, 21-18 conquest of Cignal HD Spikers’ Fauzi Ismail and Edmar Bonono.
In the semifinals, Lopez and Abdilla ended Tiger Winx’s KR Guzman and Krung Arbasto’s bid for a second straight BVR leg gold with a 21-17, 21-18 win while Ismail and Bonono swept UST-Maynilad’s Rancel Varga and Efraim Dimaculangan, 21-14, 21-12.
Guzman and Arbastro of Tiger Winx outlasted UST-Maynilad’s Varga and Dimaculangan, 21-17, 19-21, 15-11, to clinch the men’s bronze medal./PN
