NEGROS Occidental-based track and field players captured seven medals – including two golds – at the start of the 2018 Philippine National Games at the Cebu City Sports Center.
Bago City’s Maryland Torres captured the first gold in discus throw before settling for a silver medal in shot put Monday.
John Christian Urbanozo Mediano of Negros 1st team also bagged a gold medal in junior boys 100m dash.
“I just want to thank God for giving me strength in this competition,” Torres said in a Facebook post.
“I also want to thank my parents, coaches and to Bago City for trusting us to compete here in Cebu,” he wrote.
Meanwhile Michael Mana-ay of Negros 1st team captured a silver medal in senior men 100m dash before finishing with a bronze medal in senior men 110m hurdles.
Bernalyn Bejoy of Negros 1st in 400m hurdles also won a silver medal on the opening day while Jerry Belibestre, also of Negros 1st, took home a bronze medal in long jump.
PNG is a national multisport tournament created as a means to determine the possible composition of national pool athletes who will compete in international tournaments, including the Southeast Asian Games, Asian Games and the Olympics./PN
