MANILA – Filipino boxer Donnie Nieteswill make his much awaited debut inthe flyweight division when he faces Mexican Edgar Sosa in the mainevent of Pinoy Pride 38 today at the StubHub Center in Carson,California.

At stake in the bout presented by the Cebu City-based ALABoxing Promotions of Michael Aldeguer is the vacant World BoxingOrganization (WBO) Inter-Continental flyweight title.

The Murcia, Negros Occidental-native Nietes said he is veryexcited with his first fight in the 112 pound-division as he wishes tofight world champions Mexican Juan Francisco Estrada and NicaraguanRoman Gonzales after Sosa.

“Matagalkonanggustongumakyatsaflyweight division kaya excited naexcited naakolabankaySosa,” Nietes said. “Actually, maagaakongnag-start namaghandaparamaihandakoangkatawankosadivision naito.”

Sosa, for his part, said that he knows that Nietes is far differentfrom the five boxers he has defeated before, but he remains confident he’ll deal the Filipino boxer his first loss in nearly a decade.

“I respect Nietes, he’s a complete fighter,” Sosa said in aninterview. “He’s got speed and power. But I come here to win. I ammentally and physically prepared to face him on Sunday.”

“Donnie is quick to counterattack. We must beware of his right handand hooks to the body. He is a very skilled fighter with the waist,hands and legs,” added the Mexican boxer.
The 34-year-old Nietes has a 38-1-4 win-loss-draw ring recordincluding 22 knockout wins. The Negrense boxer has also been on a 27-boutwinning run since his lone loss to Indonesian AngkyAngkotta.
The 36-year-old Sosa, on the other hand, has a 52-9-0 win-loss-drawrecord, with 30 knockout victories.
Also set to see action in the undercard are Negros Occidental-nativeArthur Villanueva and Mexican Juan Jimenez for the WBO Asia Pacificbantamweight title and Mark Magsayo against Ramiro Robles for the WBOInternational featherweight belt.
The Nietes-Sosa bout is set to be telecast on ABS-CBN Channel 2 at 3:30 pm. Today./PN
