MURCIA, Negros Occidental – Melody Pons and Honey Grace Cordero of Team Darnatics emerged as champions in the 1st Women’s Grass Volleyball Open on Saturday at Dana’s Highland Cafe.
The tandem of Pons and Cordero clinched the championship after defeating the tandem of Team Murcia 1 of Mary Gwendolyn Samson and Lexy Ann Lopez in the finals.
On their way to the championship round, the tandem of Pons and Cordero defeated the squad of Dana’s Highland Cafe, led by Dana Gravino and Lyn Razel Bantad.
Samson and Lopez, on the other hand, prevailed over Team Hello, which was led by Kharla Infante,
Sofia Katrina Dela Cruz, Celine Elizabeth Marsh and Chris Song, in the other Final Four match.
Infante, Dela Cruz, Marsh and Song, on the other hand, salvaged a bronze medal finish as they prevailed over the pair of Gravino and Bantad in the battle-for-third place game.
For emerging as champions, the pair of Pons and Cordero took home P3,000 cash prize, Samson and Lopez pocketed P2,000 and P1,000 for the Team Hello.
“Unlike indoor or beach volleyball, this grass volleyball was an unusual volleyball game and was a new experience for me personally,” according to Samson.
“Instead of seven players, we only have two players on the court. It was like a beach volleyball but, instead of sand court, it is being played on grass court,” she added.
The one-day tournament that was organized by Dana’s Highland Cafe in partnership with Bacolod Negros Legends Volleyball was participated by 10 volleyball squads.
“This one-day grass volleyball event was a huge success. We are looking forward to conducting more events as we move closer to normalization,” according to tournament organizer Jeffrey Getida./PN
