MANILA – Negrense jin Angeline Alcantara clinched a gold medal for Team Philippines in the 2017 World Cadet Taekwondo Championships in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

A native of Negros Occidental, Alcantara won the -44kg category after scoring 18-3 against Oksana Smirnova of Russia.

Prior to Alcantara’s gold medal finish on Sunday, the Philippines’ highest attainment in the competition was a bronze medal courtesy of Wendil Jay Rama in 2015.

“We fought against the world’s high-rated players and even taller ones, but Angeline finished victorious,” said Alcantara’s trainer Vic Feria. “God has seen our sacrifices and struggles to achieve Angeline’s dreams.”

In the semifinals, Alcantara escaped Chaima Toumi of Tunisia 7-5. She was down 4-5 before landing a 3-point head kick in the final eight seconds to turn things around.

“We almost lost that match,” said Feria. “But God favored us.”

Alcatara opened her campaign with a pair of lopsided wins over Elisabeth Turco of Italy (17-8) and Khushboo Kumari of India (26-5). In the quarterfinals, the Negrense defeated Sofia Mykhailova of Ukraine (23-3).

Also in the Philippine delegation were Lex Joshua Provido, Mico Gabriel Chua, Raphael Ongkiko, Richard Jude Cajulis, Arianne Espida, Gerianne Kendall Therese Pineda, and Maria Carmella Santos./PN
