NEGROS Occidental repeated as champions in the secondary boys 3×3 basketball event of the 2019 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet on Tuesday at Hercor College in Roxas City.
Led by Andy Villaver, Ralph Cagalawan, Kent Esparagoza, and Rommel Hechanova, the Negrense 3×3 squad completed its title retention bid with an 18-13 win over Iloilo in the finals.
The Bacolod Tay Tung High School represented Negros, which has been undefeated the entire tournament after sweeping their elimination round foes Guimaras 17-14), Capiz (21-19), Iloilo (15-13), and Aklan (22-12). In the semifinals, Negros edged Capiz, 18-11.
Regardless of the title repeat, Negros team head coach Dexter Dy said the team will not go to the 2019 Palarong Pambansa in Davao City since 3×3 basketball was not included there.
“It was very unfortunate na hindi kasali ang 3×3 basketball sa Palarong Pambansa but I still lauded our players for still achieving the goal of championship even if they know that hindi sila makakasali sa Palaro,” Dy said.
In secondary boys basketball, Negros Occidental and Capiz have set up a titular showdown after beating their semifinals foes.
The Negrenses reached the championship round after unseating last year’s champion Iloilo, 90-73, while Capiz walloped Aklan, 101-73./PN
