MANILA – Negros First’s campaign in the 2018 Junior League Softball World Series came to an end after a 0-2 loss to Europe-Africa (Italy) in the quarterfinal round at the Everest Ballpark in Kirkland, Washington.
Martina Colonna made Europe-Africa’s first score on top of first before Sarah Bortolotti sealed the win when she booked the Italian’s second point of the match on the top of seventh inning on Friday.
Negros First, which represents Philippines and Asia-Pacific, tried to pull a win in the bottom of seventh but was only good to reach the first base and failed to advance to the next.
Pitcher Maya Milano earned the victory for the Europe-Africa as she allowed four hits and zero runs over seven innings while also striking out five and walking one.
Bacolod City native’s Glecilyn Alipato, meanwhile, took the defeat for Negros First as she allowed four hits and two runs over seven innings for Europe-Africa while also striking out 10.
Angela Solidarios had the most hits for Negros First with two, including a near hit in the first inning.
Charlie Montgomery led Europe-Africa with two hits in four at bats while Sarah Fattori had seven chances in the field, the most in the team.
With the loss, the Antonio Oquendo Jr.-mentored Negrenses will play for the consolation round against Southeast from whom they suffered a 3-6 defeat in the opener./PN
