Negros First edges Latin America in Little League

MANILA – Negros First capped off its preliminary games in the 2018 Little League Softball World Series with a 2-0 win over Latin America on Monday at the Alpenrose Stadium in Portland, Oregon.

Bacolod City native Mary Joy Alpitche spearheaded the win for the Negrenses as she surrendered zero runs on one hit over six innings while also striking out four and walking one.

Kenchie Tan, Anna Rose Mactbag, Kyle Marie Matarong, Angel Zyra Motin, April Ann Mongcal, and Trisha Karyl Hicayen all had one hit each.

Viviana Garza Lara, meanwhile, took the loss for Latin America after giving up two runs on seven hits over five innings and striking out one. Daphne Garza Becerra led Latin America with one hit in two at bats.

On Sunday afternoon Negros First fell short of its comeback bid after a 3-4 defeat to Southwest.

The Philippines and Asia-Pacific representative ended its elimination round schedule with a 1-3 win-loss card.

Southwest unloaded four hits in the first inning on single by Ava Burkett and a triple by Kayla Giardina.

Negros First attempted a fight-back behind a double by Hicayen in the fourth and a single by Neavia Marie Emborniza in the fifth.

Giardina pitched Southwest to victory as she lasted six innings, allowing eight hits and three runs while striking out five and walking zero.

Alpitche, meanwhile, took the loss for Negros after allowing four hits and four runs while striking out six.

Negros First racked up eight hits in the game with Emborniza and Jhaycel Roldan each had multiple hits./PN
