MANILA – The Negros First softball team clinched a slot into the World Series after ruling the major finals of the 2019 Asia Pacific Little League Softball Championship on Saturday in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The Negros Occidental-based softbelles clinched the major league championship for the third straight year after a 17-0 domination over China to earn a slot into the World Series later this year in Oregon.
Prior to the title-clinching victory, the Negros First defeated Hong Kong (15-0), China (18-1) and Indonesia (23-0) in the eliminations before defeating the host team anew in the semifinals.
“We are very thankful to everyone who supported these girls in one way or another,” said Romeo Sison of DepEd – Negros Occidental. “We hope that our provincial government will continue to support us in the upcoming World Series.”
The Negros First squad is hoping to improve its showing in Oregon after placing sevent during last year’s Little League Softball World Series. The squad ended at fifth place in 2017.
The Philippine junior softball team also stamped its class in Indonesia with a close 16-14 win over New Zealand in the finals. The team will represent the country in Little League World Series in Kirkland./PN
