NEGROS Occidental overcame a twice-to-win disadvantage to stave off Iloilo and claim the secondary girls volleyball title in the 2018 WVPRISAA Meet yesterday at the Iloilo Doctors’ College Nursing Gym in Iloilo City.

Led by veterans Shane Carmona, Alyssa Bertolano, Marianne Sotomil, and Joan Marie Monares, the Negrenses cruised to a 25-23, 25-12, 25-12 win in the morning to virtually tie the series at 1-1.

In the deciding match, Negros had to overcome a first-set defeat to pull off a 22-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-17 victory over the Ilonggas and punch a ticket to represent Western Visayas in the National PRISAA Meet in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.

After losing a close first set, Negros got things going from Carmona and Joan Doguna for an early 5-point lead. Iloilo tried to inch closer but Negros responded with hits from Bertolano and Monares to tie the set score 1-1.

Both teams fought tooth and nail in the third frame with several lead changes but Negros proved to be the tougher team down the stretch, snatching the set behind hits by Carmona and Doguna.

With the victory already within grasp, Negros zoomed to an early edge in the fourth set with hits from Carmona and Bertolano. Iloilo had its last stand when it trimmed the deficit but Negros went with finishing blows from Doguna.

Also part of the Ian Macariola-mentored Negros were Rhean Almendralejo, Nohlin Jundana, Marixi Maligmat, Jeanny Padilla, Shaira Jardio, Kiesha Bedonia, and Erika Deloria.
