Negros, Iloilo trounce chess foes in PCAP

MANILA – Negros Kingsmen and Iloillo Kisela Knights bested their foes in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) San Miguel Corporation-Ayala Land Cup on Saturday night.

The Kingmen bounced back from two losses with 16-5 win over Sunrays and 13.5-7.5 domination over Lapu-Lapu City Naki Warriors to improve their stand in the Southern Division rankings with a 8-7 win-loss slate.

The Kingsmen edged Sunrays in the blitz game, 6-1, behind wins by Mari Turqueza (Board 1), Nelson Mariano (Board 2), Rowelyn Acedo (Board 3), Theseus Benitez Jr. (Board 5), Adrian dela Cruz (Board 6), and Rolzon Roullo (Board 7).

The Negrenses also dominated Sunrays in the rapid event 10-4, with Turqueza, Mariano, Benitez, Dela Cruz, and Roullo taking two points each.

The Kingsmen settled for a 3.5-3.5 deadlock with Naki Warriors in blitz with only Turqueza, Mariano and  Roullo scoring wins and Acedo settling for a draw.

Negros, however, managed to bounce back in rapid, 10-4, with two-pointers each from Turqueza, Mariano, Mayor and Benitez and draws from Acedo and Roullo.

“It was an encouraging sight to see that we were able to bounce back with wins over Sunrays and Lapu-Lapu City,” said Kingsmen team manager Junaico Segismar.

The Kisela Knights, on the other hand, also walloped the Naki Warriors, 11.5-9.5, and Surigao Checkmates, 13.5-7.5 to move up to 11-4.

Carrying the cudgels for Iloilo in the blitz game were Rogelio Antonio Jr. (Board 1), Karl Victor Ochoa (Board 2), Cesar Mariano (Board 4), and Fritz Bryan Porras (Board 5), while Cherry Ann Mejia settled for draw in Board 3.

The Kisela Knights ended up with 7-7 draw against the Naki Warriors in the rapid event with Antonio, Ochoa and Lloyd Lanciola (Board 7) and Mejia finishing with draw.

Iloilo cruised to a 5.5-1.5 triumph over Surigao in the blitz game on victories by Ochoa, Mejia, Cesar Mariano, John Michael Silvederio, and Mark Mariano and a draw from Antonio.

The Kisela Knights also barely escaped Checkmates in rapid, 8-6, on two-pointers from Mejia, Cesar Mariano and Porras and draws by Antonio and Silvederio./PN
