BACOLOD City – The number of firecracker-related injuries in Negros Occidental during the recent New Year celebrations has reached 17 as of yesterday.
Bu the figure remains lower than last year’s 66 cases. The Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (Nocppo) continues to monitor the cases.
The “substantial” decrease in the nationwide statistics is attributed to the strict implementation of President Rodrigo Duterte’s Executive Order (EO) 28, according to Health secretary Francisco Duque III.
The President signed the EO – which controls and regulates the use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices across the country – in June last year.
The EO limits the use of firecrackers to community fireworks display that must be held in designated “firecracker zones.”
Local government units were mandated to identify these zones in their respective areas.
There were more than 70 firecracker zones assigned in Negros Occidental during the recent celebration of New Year.
Nocppo on Jan. 1 reported that welcoming 2018 in the province was “generally peaceful.”
Yesterday, it reported that 17 individuals were injured by firecracker blasts in various areas in the province, including this capital city.
According to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, firecracker-related incidents were mostly caused by Piccolo blasts.
Those who were hurt include three minors aged 11, 13 and 15 – one from Silay City, the two others from Bacolod City – Nocppo said.
Another case was that of the 19-year-old Mark Maalat of Sipalay City, Negros Occidental, who was drunk when he lighted a Five Star firecracker, resulting to his injuries.
Some firecracker blast victims sustained minor injuries and were immediately discharged from the hospital after receiving first aid and other necessary medical treatments.
Nocppo also reported that there were several stabbing incidents in the city from Dec. 31, 2017 to Jan. 2, 2018.
Nocppo director Senior Superintendent Rodolfo Castil Jr. earlier thanked the public for its cooperation in making sure that welcoming the New Year in the province is peaceful./PN
