BACOLOD City – Negros Occidental’s Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) is producing charcoal using farm wastes, particularly briquetted rice hulls, as an income-generating initiative.
Shiela Jumayao, project development officer, said the processing center is located at the Negros First Ranch (NFR) in Barangay Sta. Rosa, Murcia town.
The Negros First charcoal initiative is being implemented under the PVO Waste Management Program.
Jumayao said the sampling started two months ago, and this year, the province is gearing for full production.
At present, the processing center has one unit of briquetting machine making use of the abundant sources of rice hulls at the farm for the initial production.
A second unit will be delivered soon.
“The briquetted charcoal is one of the farm products of NFR positioned to be a new income-generating initiative of the province,” Jumayao said, adding that they will also source farm wastes from rice mills in Negros Occidental.
Briquetted charcoal is more efficient compared to traditional charcoal, and costs about 50 percent less, he said.
“This will also contribute to the environment protection efforts of the province since it will lessen the use of trees,” Jumayao added.
The PVO has already introduced the use of Negros First charcoal to grilled food vendors. (PNA)
