BACOLOD City – Daniel “Bitay” Lacson Jr., former governor of Negros Occidental, passed away at the age of 77 on September 6, surrounded by family in his home here. He succumbed to complications from a brain tumor.
Lacson’s political career was distinguished by his leadership from 1986 to 1992.
Following his tenure as governor, he held prominent positions as chairman of the Philippine National Bank (PNB) and the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS).
Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson expressed his condolences via social media, acknowledging the late governor’s significant contributions to the province and the nation.
“The province has lost a brilliant and well-loved leader,” he remarked.
Among others, the late governor was known for his visionary “Mini Taiwan development framework” for Negros Occidental and his initiation of the “Star of Hope” project, which redefined the traditional Christmas parol symbol during the festive season.
Bacolod City’s Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez also paid tribute, describing the late governor as “a true public servant whose life’s work is worth emulating by younger generations.”/PN
