NEGROS Occidental kicked off its title defense with a 25-15, 25-15 victory over Aklan in the secondary girls volleyball of the Western Visayas Private Schools Athletic Association (WVPRISAA) on Saturday at University of St. La Salle Bacolod gym.
Kyrzten Annikha Cabasac, Erika Deloria and Shane Carmona spearheaded the attack for the Negrenses, who were without key players Joan Marie Monares, Alyssa Bertolano, Katherine Cortez, and Beatrice Decena.
Negros Occidental assistant coach Roberto Calamba Jr. said that they opted to try difference combinations against the Aklanons with the four key players under the weather.
âThey are feeling something so we opted to try other combinations and we are glad that it worked for us,â said Calamba, who added that the four is expected to be available when they take on Iloilo today at the STI-West Negros University Gym.
In secondary boys basketball, the shorthanded University of San Agustin-Iloilo failed to sustain its strong start to suffer a 71-77 defeat at the hands of Hercor College-Capiz over at the STI-WNU Gym.
The Ilonggos were up by as much as 11 points midway in the second half but lack of personnel that was decimated by the fouling out of some key players doomed their chances against the Capiznons.
The WVPRISAA Regional Athletic and Cultural Meet has formally opened on Saturday afternoon over at the STI-WNU where around 1,500 student-athletes, coaches and delegation officials from Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan and Negros Occidental showed up.
The week-long event dubbed as âSustaining Filipino athletes for global competitivenessâ will serve as a qualification to the National PRISAA slated May 18-24, 2019 at Davao City.
This is the first time that the Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports, Cultural and Educational Association (NOPSSCEA) hosted the annual event after returning from then Negros Island Region./PN
