NEUROLOGICAL disorders are mental disabilities that affect the brain and the nervous system. The human body’s nervous system includes the spinal cord, nerves, and brain. Many neurological disabilities limit a person’s movements and day-to-day physical activities.According to the World Health Organization (2016), these disorders includeepilepsy, Alzheimer disease and other dementias, cerebrovascular diseases including stroke, migraine and other headache disorders, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, neuroinfections, brain tumors, traumatic disorders of the nervous system due to head trauma, and neurological disorders as a result of malnutrition. Stroke is the Philippines’ second leading cause of death and Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders.
In December 1999, St. Paul’s Hospital of Iloilo, Inc. (SPHI) opened its Neuroscience Center, being the FIRST in Western Visayas to establish a digital EEG (Electroencephalogram). It includes a video camera for better documentation and recording. The centeris one of the special units of the hospital that is equipped to help facilitate medical care through performing procedures for the diagnosis and work-out of conditions related to psychological and neurological problems like seizures, dementia, stroke and brain circulation, and Encephalopathies.
The SPHI Neuroscience Center, with its up-to-date facilities, offers the following services:
* Electroencephalogram (EEG) – This is a simple and safe method of knowing whether a person has convulsion, seizure, or any other neurological problems. The procedure is approximately done within 30 minutes.
* Transcranial Doppler (TCD)–This is a form of ultrasound that uses high frequency sound waves to measure the rate and direction of blood flow inside vessels. The procedure is approximately done within 30 minutes to 1 hour.
* Memory Test – Thisis designed to assess the patient’s level of cognitive functioning which aims to establish the presence or absence of dementia. This test approximately lasts 2 – 3 hours.
When one experiences any of these neurological disorders or may show possible symptoms, it is best to consult a neurologist who will advise the patient on what proper treatments should be done.
