ILOILO City – To minimize, if not eliminate, road accidents, the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) passed an ordinance adopting the Department of Public Works and Highways’ (DPWH) standards for road signs and pavement markings.
“The design and installation of a considerable number of road and commercial signs within the City of Iloilo still do not meet the safety requirements, thereby contributing to vehicular accidents in the city area,” noted the approved ordinance authored by Councilor Sedfrey Cabaluna.
DPWH has a Revised Manual on Highway Safety Design Standards.
“It is a book of standards. Gusto ta nga sundon ina being a highly urbanized city. Manami man nga mag-agi kita sa dalanon nga sakto ang pagkabutang, sakto ang color, visible kag maka-guide gid sa aton mga pumuluyo,” said Cabaluna.
Under the new ordinance, the size, shape, color, reflectorization and illumination, letter type and size, as well as location and height of road signs shall be generally based on the standards set by DPWH.
Also, road and commercial signs shall be installed only upon the approval of authorized entities, i.e., DPWH for national roads and bridges and the Public Safety and Transportation Management Office (PSTMO) or City Engineering Office for local roads and bridges.
No road signs shall bear any advertising or commercial message or any other message that is not essential to traffic control; except for signage in local roads and bridges where brand sponsorship is allowed, subject to the regulation of the PSTMO in terms of the size, shape, and placement of the corresponding brand.
Also, the placement of unauthorized road and commercial signs on the highway right-of-way or adjacent to the road by a private organization or individual as well as the display of unofficial non-standard and non-essential signs are not allowed./PN
