MANILA – New Filipino lawyers were advised to practice their profession in their home provinces.

A total of 3,747 out of 6,344 examinees passed the 2016 Bar Examinations, the Supreme Court announced on Wednesday.

The Office of the Bar Confidant said that it was the first time that not a single Metro Manila-based school placed in the Top 10.

“This is historic. I think this is a positive sign for legal education in the Philippines as a whole, as it will encourage more prospective law students from Visayas and Mindanao to study closer to home,” said Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, a Bar topnotcher in 1990.

This year’s Bar results underscores the fact that the best and the brightest of the country can be found in the provinces outside the capital, Pimentel said.

University of San Carlos’ Karen Calam topped this year’s Bar with a score of 89.05 percent. She was followed by Alanna Khio from Silliman University (88.95 percent), and Fiona Cristy Lao from University of San Carlos (88.80 percent), and Athalia Liong from Andres Bonifacio College (88.80 percent).

Graduates from the University of San Agustin in Iloilo City, Ateneo de Davao University in Davao City, Northwestern University in Laoag City, and the University of Batangas in Batangas City rounded up the list of Bar topnotchers.

“This is a sign – a sign that we really should focus on bringing development to the regions. While I recognize that at present most of the opportunities for lawyers can be found in Metro Manila, I encourage our new lawyers to look forward, give back to their home towns, and help the government bring progress and prosperity to their provinces,” the senator from Cagayan de Oro said./PN
