NEW ORDINANCE; Boracay resorts, tourists required to plant trees

MALAY, Aklan – The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Aklan has approved the “Isang-Daang Turista, Isang-Daang Puno” ordinance of Malay, Aklan.

The measure requires hotels and resorts in Malay to assist at least 100 guests to plant tree seedlings in coordination with the Barangay Council, Municipal Agriculture Office and the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO).

The MENRO is also tasked to monitor and record the tree planting activities of resorts and hotels.

Establishments not complying with the ordinance risk not having their business permits renewed.

Since the loosening of quarantine restrictions this year, Boracay Island has welcomed back over half a million tourists already.

The new ordinance promotes responsible and sustainable tourism. Authored by Sangguniang Bayan member Nickie Cahilig, it can help restore, recover and reforest Boracay.

“Trees are essential in protecting and preserving the environment, fresh water together with its natural habitat. Ito rin ay paghahanda sa mabilis na progreso, counteract climate change at community awareness to plant trees,” stressed Cahilig.

According to Global Forest Watch, the town of Malay lost two hectares of humid primary forest or 0.43 percent of its total tree cover from 2002 to 2020./PN
