MANILA – Days after he was elected the new president of the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), Ricky Vargas called for unity among various sports bodies in the country.
“I will try my best to unite and work with the government to work with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and empower the National Sports Associations (NSAs),” he told CNN Philippines during the Philippine Sportswriters Association Annual Awards at the Manila Hotel on Tuesday.
Conflicts in the grassroots level must be addressed to identify the best talents available, Vargas said.
“When there are disputes in the NSAs, we cannot find the best athletes. We need to go beyond the disputes and look for the best athletes that can represent and fight for our country,” he said.
Vargas will also look into the organizations’ financial status and agenda. “I’d like to be able to get a baseline of what we have in the POC in terms of the financial records and in terms of what we need to do to move forward,” he said.
Moreover, Vargas will sit down with Foreign Affairs secretary Alan Peter Cayetano to get updates on preparations for the upcoming Asian Games and the Southeast Asian Games next year.
The new POC president – he unseated Jose “Peping” Cojuangco Jr. in a court-ordered election on Feb. 23 – wants to boost the morale of Filipino athletes. “I’d like to meet each and every athlete. I’d like to be able to motivate them to fight for country.” (CNN Philippines)
