New Washington family hit with three COVID-19 cases

NEW WASHINGTON, Aklan – Coronavirus transmission is fast among household members.

This is true here. A 59-year-old male positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infected family members.

The patient, a resident of Barangay Poblacion, was admitted in a private hospital in Kalibo, Aklan on Nov. 3 for difficulty of breathing and weakness due to a kidney disease.

He tested positive for COVID-19 on Nov. 5, said Dr. Daystar Sedillo, municipal health officer.

This case had no travel history outside the province.

“Taong bahay ang pasyente, ngunit palaging may bisita ang kanyang anak sa kanilang bahay. Nagkaroon siya ng sintomas dahil mahina na ang kanyang immune system,” said Sedillo. 

Eventually, the patient’s high-risk contacts – wife and son – also tested positive for COVID-19.

Prior to their testing, the mother and son were brought to the Ligtas Covid Center for isolation for being the close contacts of the patient.

On Sunday, the Provincial Health Office-Aklan confirmed the positive test results of the 47-year-old mother and her 18-year-old son.

The 29-year-old staff of the Municipal Health Office from Barangay Pinamuk-an, New Washington who transported the 59-year old patient to the hospital also tested positive for coronavirus.

To date, the coastal town of New Washington has seven confirmed COVID-19 cases, with three having recovered already.

“Active contact tracing and surveillance are being conducted to ensure the safety of the community.  Everyone is reminded to be extra vigilant in observing the proper guidelines for the prevention of COVID-19 infection,” Sedillo stressed.

So far, the province of Aklan has recorded a total of 176 confirmed COVID-19 cases (146 have recovered already.
