KALIBO, Aklan – Power outages hit the province of Aklan and northern Antique on Oct. 26.

National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) corporate communications officer Michelle Viscera said the series of power interruptions in the whole coverage area of Aklan Electric Cooperative (Akelco) was due to strong winds and heavy rains brought by Typhoon “Quinta”.

The 138 kilovolt Panitan-Nabas transmission line, the main transmission backbone in Western Panay, and the 69kV Nabas-Sapian line experienced power line trips.

Power outage began at 2:48 a.m. with the tripping of 139 kV transmission line.

The power was restored at 3:09 a.m. in Caticlan (Malay) and Boracay substations and the 69kV Nabas to Sapian transmission line in Kalibo, Lezo, Altavas and Nabas sub-stations at 3:19 a.m.

A transmission line-tripping incident also occurred at 3:10 a.m. affecting consumers of Buruanga, Malay, portion of Nabas and Boracay Island.

An unscheduled power interruption followed at 3:47 a.m. in Kalibo, Numancia, Makato, Tangalan, Ibajay, Nabas, Madalag, Lezo, Libacao, New Washington, Balete, Batan, Altavas in Aklan as well as Pandan and Libertad in Antique.

The power was restored at 3:57 a.m. but the line tripped again at 4:02 a.m. The unplanned outage affected Lezo, Andagao (Kalibo), Altavas and Nabas substations of Akelco resulting to a five-hour power interruption.

Restoration of power transmission services was reported at 9:39 a.m. in the whole Akelco franchise area with the country’s power grid operator saying the root cause of power tripping was “a fallen bamboo tree between structures in Tagbaya, Ibajay, Aklan.”/PN
