MANILA – Filipino boxer Donnie Nietes made a successful debut in the flyweight division as he scored a unanimous decision win over Mexican Edgar Sosa on Sunday at the Stubhub Center in Carson, California.
With the Pinoy Pride 38 victory, the Murcia, Negros Occidental-native Nietes captured the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) Inter-Continental flyweight belt.
Both fighters showed little action in the first two rounds until the punches picked up in the third and fourth frame as Nietes staggered Sosa with his jabs and right straights hits.
Nietes led a master class in boxing the succeeding rounds with his precise jabs and hard straight rights to bludgeon Sosa’s face. The Mexican tried his best to launch his own attacks but Nietes remained evasive.
In the last few rounds, Nietes wobbled Sosa anew with his overhand rights but the Filipino boxer failed to score a knockdown as the Mexican proved durable, withstanding the Filipino’s punches.
With the victory, the 34-year-old Nietes improved his win-loss-draw ring record to 39-1-4, with 22 victories coming by way of knockouts. Sosa’s slate, meanwhile, slid down to 52-10-0, with 30 stoppage wins.
Meanwhile, Negros Occidental-native Arthur Villanueva retained the WBO Asia-Pacific bantamweight belt with a brutal second round knockout victory over Mexican Juan Jimenez.
After a controversial end to their first encounter in Bacolod City, Villanueva made sure there would be no questions asked this time as he knocked down Jimenez with a perfectly-timed right cross in the second quarter.
In the other match, Mark Magsayo kept his unbeaten record as he scored a lopsided unanimous decision victory over Ramiro Robles of Mexico for the WBO International featherweight belt./PN
