MANILA – The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) has announced the cancellation of the Philippine National Games (PNG) and the Philippine Youth Games-Batang Pinoy (PYG-BP) this year due to the ongoing scare of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
PNG and PYG-BP project director Atty. Guillermo Iroy Jr. said in a statement last night the two sporting meets were scrapped as there is still no vaccine available for COVID-19.
“Pursuant to the Presidential Proclamation No. 922 declaring a State of Public Health Emergency throughout the Philippines and the evolving COVID-19 situation in the country, the PSC informed the public that the PNG and PYG-BP for calendar year 2020 has been cancelled,” said Iroy.
The 2020 PNG and PYG-BP events were supposed to tipoff in Metro Manila using the newly-renovated Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Malate and the Philsports Complex in Pasig as venues.
PNG is a national multi-sport tournament created to determine the possible composition of athletes who will banner the country’s colors in international tournaments like the Southeast Asian Games, Asian Games and the Olympics.
PYG-BP, on the other hand, serves as the national sports competition for athletes aged 15 years old and below, and is envisioned to address the need for a grassroots program centered on values formation inherent in the practice of sports and play./PN
