BACOLOD City – The Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) has yet to act on the environmental violations of some 33 barangays in the city, according to a Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) official.

DENR-Negros Occidental special concerns unit head Joan Nathaniel Gerangaya said the EMB has yet to file charges against the villages.

The EMB – the national authority responsible for pollution prevention and environmental impact assessment – is under the DENR.

Gerangaya said the EMB must file charges against all officials of the erring barangays.

The officials – if found guilty – may be disqualified from holding public office, Gerangaya added.

Vice Mayor El Cid Fimiliaran, chairman of the city’s Solid Waste Action Team (SWAT), said they have caught residents of the barangays illegally dumping their waste.

Familiaran added that he already passed a list of names of the barangays to the EMB.

The barangays violated Republic Act 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, Familiaran said.

On the other hand, the city government launched yesterday the “Urban Greening Program” at the MassKara Hall of the Bacolod City Government Center (BCGC).

Representatives from various national government agencies and local officials attended the launch.

The program aims to “beautify” the city by making it “clean and green.”

During the launch, Councilor Em Ang, chairwoman of the Sangguniang Panlungsod committee on tourism, presented the plan for the landscaping of 16 areas in the city.

The areas include the BCGC, the Bacolod-Talisay boundary, the plaza, and areas along the Circumferential Road going to the Bacolod-Silay Airport, among others./PN
