MANILA – The Department of Tourism is expecting tourist arrivals to further increase this year as it rehabilitates some of the top tourist sites of the country.

Tourism secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said the opening of new airports and roads will make it easier for tourists to go to some of the major tourist draws without needing to pass through Metro Manila.

Tourism-related businesses contributed 12.7 percent of the Philippine economy and created 5.4 million jobs in 2018, Puyat said, despite the 6-month closure of Boracay.

This year, Puyat said that while they are rehabilitating some of the country’s major tourist destinations, none of them need to be closed to the public.

“We’re confident that with no closure, only rehab, tourism revenue will be increasing,” Puyat said. (ABS-CBN News)
